In addition, hypnotherapy can also be used to ease withdrawal with pain management, anduncover past traumas that may be root causes of psychological dependency. Eachhypnotherapist is different, and there are several schools of thought thatexist in the field of hypnotherapy. Here is an overview of the varieties ofhypnotherapy and their uses.
- Traditional Hypnotherapy
First used in the Victorian ages, traditional hypnotherapy focuses on removal of symptoms through the power of suggestion. Largely used to lower anxiety levels, traditional hypnotherapy is also employed to treat alcohol and drug dependency. - Analytic Hypnotherapy
Explored by pioneering analysts such as Freud, analytic hypnotherapy, also known as hyptoanalysis, combines hypnosis with psychotherapeutic techniques. Age regression techniques are used in analytic hypnotherapy to release buried emotional pain and heal childhood memories. Analytic hypnotherapy can be used to treat root causes of alcohol and drug dependency, as well as to reduce or eliminate symptoms of trauma for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients. - Ericksonian Hypnotherapy
With a focus on analysis and linguistics, Ericksonian hypnotherapy was developed in the early twentieth century and is still in use today. Developed by influential hypnotist Milton H. Erickson, Ericksonian hypnotherapy employs a casual and conversational approach to hypnosis aimed at effecting change in a short period of time. - Cognitive Behavioral Hypnotherapy
Cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy rose to popularity during the 1980s, and mixes traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with techniques of hypnosis. This approach can be used to reposition negative self beliefs, adjust motivations, and provide tangible changes in behavior. Cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy can also be used to combat anxiety and remove self-defeating behaviors through suggestion of positive beliefs and visualization techniques. - New Age Hypnotherapy
New Age hypnotherapy, sometimes known as “mesmerism,” focuses on energy flow. With a strong spiritual emphasis, New Age hypnotherapy can be used to regress to past lives and provide spiritual cleansing, using Freud's theories of hypnotic regression to access spiritual information.
