How Physical Stress Can Indicate a Lack of Life Balance
Physical stress is the body’s natural reaction to difficult situations, trauma, danger or burnout—all indicators that life isn’t perhaps as balanced as it should be. In some situations, physical stress can be a positive force—alerting us through our body’s “fight or flight” reaction that we are in danger, and naturally preparing the body to cope. However, prolonged physical stress can have a profound effect on both our health and psyche, establishing the need for peace and balance in our lives. Especially after an alcohol or drug addiction has been cured, we need to find new coping mechanisms for physical stress. Fortunately, some private rehab centers provide individualized counseling and life coaching that can help us learn how to achieve and keep a healthy life balance.
Signs of Physical Stress
Fortunately, many luxury rehab facilities have an array of activities that bring you back into balance in mind, body and soul. However, many recovered dependent individuals find that the real signs of physical stress tend to manifest more once they leave the safe reprieve of inpatient recovery programs. By learning to recognize the signs of physical stress, you can better manage the balance in your life.
Acute stress often comes in the form a racing heart with rapid shallow breathing, with tension in the jaw and clenched or grinding teeth. For some, physical stress appears as a migraine headache, jumbled thoughts or lack of clarity when concentrating. Internally, physical stress may feel like knots in the stomach with chest pains, nausea, or indigestion. Our normal energy levels can also become cues that our lives are out of balance, as some people feel fatigued and lose interest in normally pleasurable activities such as sex or eating. Extreme stress can result in memory problems, nervousness, anxiety, and even addictive behaviors.
How Physical Stress Can Indicate a Lack of Life Balance
Stress comes from many sources, but all forms of stress tend to take on a physical form. Physical stress becomes a cue that tells us our lives are out of balance, and that we need to restore a sense of homeostasis to our lifestyles. Because physical stress is meant as a cue that our lives are out of balance, the first step to a peaceful existence is to examine where your time and energy are going.
What times during the day do you experience physical stress cues in your body? Do you find that it often happens when working late (indicating perhaps an overinvestment of psychic or physical energy at work)? Perhaps you notice it occurs in the evenings as you tend to others’ needs (perhaps indicating that you are not spending enough energy on yourself). Maybe you realize that your greatest levels of physical stress are coming after too much time spent alone without the companionship of others (perhaps indicating the need for more social interaction). By following the physical cues your body presents you with, you can learn to interpret messages of burnout and stress.
As you notice the physical stress reactions in your body, you might want to reflect on the balance within your life. Ask yourself if your body is receiving the relaxation and rest it needs, through adequate sleep time, regular meals and frequent exercise. Additionally, ensure that you find time for companionship and social interactions, so that not all of your non-work time is spent alone. Another way to achieve a greater sense of life balance is to schedule solo time, whether you spend it relaxing, meditating, taking a walk, reading or just setting aside a few minutes to think about your dreams and desires. As you begin to take time for each area of your life, you will find your needs are better met physically and emotionally, and that greater levels of life balance coincide with lessened physical stress.
