Balancing Self Love and Self Improvement
Oct 29, 2009 No Comments
Each one of us wants to feel good about ourselves, free of the weight and fear that low self-esteem can cause. At the same time, most of us seek to improve ourselves, learning from our mistakes, and continuing to grow. However, healthy growth requires a balance between self-love that provides the safety and security to challenge ourselves, as well as the drive to assess and alter those things about yourself you need to change.
Finding a Balance Between Self-Love and Self-Improvement
Here are a few key strategies that can help you strike a balance between self-esteem and approaching areas for improving yourself.
- Separate Identity From Action
Many of us equate any action we regret with our value as a person. We label ourselves as “alcoholics” because we are currently dependent on alcohol or as a “failure” because we lost an important relationship or job. Remember that you are more than the sum of your actions, with intrinsic worth and value.
- Be Honest With Yourself
As long as we remain in denial about our personal problems, we will be unable to change our actions and outcomes. Remember that real change begins with truth and don't be afraid to ask yourself tough questions. Candidly assess your actions towards others, your habits, and your progress toward your goals.
- Look Toward Tomorrow
The past has served its purpose in getting you where you are today. Look towards a future where you can obtain the goals you want to in your life and in yourself.
- Be Patient With Yourself
The road to self-improvement is not without its bumps. Avoid beating yourself up for every minor imperfection. Instead, focus your energy on optimism and kindness towards yourself, as you get ready to regroup and try again.
- Look for Opportunities to Optimize
Remember that some of our best opportunities are the challenges that we face. Approach everything you do with diligence and possibility, seeing the potential in yourself and the world.
- Review Each Day
Every night, ask yourself how feel about the actions and events of the day. Strike a balance between honest assessment and useless regret. Note ways you can improve your performance and outcomes tomorrow, and revel in the opportunities the future brings.
